An IPTV subscription is paid access to television channels delivered over your internet connection for a fixed period, usually one, three, six or twelve months. You do not need a dish, an aerial or an engineer visit: you subscribe, receive your access details and watch through an app.

What an IPTV subscription includes

Whatever the provider, a subscription is made up of the same parts:

  • A channel line-up – the live channels you can watch, sometimes with catch-up.
  • A term – how long your access lasts before renewal.
  • A connection limit – how many devices can stream at the same moment.
  • Access details – a provider app login, or an M3U playlist or Xtream Codes login for a third-party player. Our article on M3U and Xtream Codes explains the difference.
  • Support – help with setup and faults.

The choices that change the price

ChoiceWhat it meansHow to decide
Plan lengthLonger terms normally cost less per month but tie up more money upfrontStart with a short term if the provider is new to you
Simultaneous devicesEach extra stream running at the same time adds costCount the screens that are really on at once, not every device you own
Picture qualityHD and 4K need more bandwidth and are sometimes priced separatelyA 4K plan is wasted on a slow line or an HD television

IPTV Europa keeps this simple: four plan lengths and a device selector from one to four. You can see every combination on the pricing page.

Five checks before you subscribe in the UK

  1. Is the provider licensed for the channels it sells? This is the question that separates a legal service from an illegal one. A legitimate provider can tell you who it is and does not offer every premium sports and film channel for the price of a sandwich.
  2. Is there a real company behind it? Look for a company name, an address and written terms.
  3. How do you pay? Card payments through a recognised payment provider give you protection. Demands for cryptocurrency or bank transfers to private individuals are a warning sign.
  4. Can you get help? Send a pre-sales question and see whether anyone answers.
  5. Does it run on your device? Check which player apps are supported before paying. Our IPTV player guide covers the main options.

What you need at home

A stable broadband line matters more than a fast one. As a rule of thumb, allow about 5 Mbit/s for each HD stream and 25 Mbit/s for 4K, and connect the TV by Ethernet cable if Wi-Fi is patchy. Almost any modern device will do. If you are new to the subject, read what IPTV is and how it works first.

How IPTV subscriptions renew and end

IPTV subscriptions are sold in two ways, and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.

  • Prepaid terms run for the period you paid for and then stop. Nothing renews unless you order again. This is the common model for independent providers.
  • Rolling contracts renew every month until you cancel. This is typical for broadband TV bundles and app-based memberships. Check the notice period and whether a minimum term applies.

When you buy an IPTV subscription UK consumer law applies to the purchase. For contracts concluded online you normally have 14 days to cancel. If you ask for a digital service to start immediately, you may have to pay for the days used or lose the right to cancel once the service has been fully supplied. Citizens Advice explains the rules in plain language.

After you subscribe: setup in four steps

  1. Keep the confirmation email. It contains your access details and the end date of your term.
  2. Install a player from your device's official app store.
  3. Enter the access details exactly as given. Most login errors are typing mistakes.
  4. Test every device once while support is fresh in your mind, not on the evening of a big match.

If something does not work, note the device, the app and the exact error message before contacting support. That shortens the exchange considerably.

Where to buy IPTV safely

When you buy IPTV online, pay only through the provider's own website or a known payment service, keep the confirmation email and make sure the terms are visible before you pay. Avoid sellers who only take payment through social media messages or gift cards. If a service offers a trial, use it before you commit to a long plan.

Frequently asked questions

How does an IPTV subscription work?

You pay for access for a fixed period, receive login details, and enter them in a player app on your TV, stick, phone or computer. The channels then stream over your broadband connection.

Do I need a TV Licence with an IPTV subscription in the UK?

Yes, if you watch or record live TV on any channel or service, or use BBC iPlayer. The rule depends on what you watch, not on the technology that delivers it.

Can I use one IPTV subscription on several devices?

Only on as many devices at the same time as your plan allows. IPTV Europa plans can be ordered for one to four simultaneous devices.
