An IPTV EPG (electronic programme guide) is the TV schedule inside your player app: what is on now, what comes next and, in many apps, a full grid for the coming days. It turns a long list of channels into something you can actually browse. This article explains where the data comes from, how to add it and how to fix the most common problems.
Where IPTV EPG data comes from
Your IPTV service publishes the guide as an XMLTV file: a structured list of channels and programmes with start and end times. The format is documented on the XMLTV project wiki. Your player downloads the file, matches each programme to a channel in your playlist and shows the result.
How you load it depends on the login type:
| Login type | How the EPG loads |
|---|---|
| Xtream Codes | Automatically from the same server; nothing to enter |
| M3U playlist | Sometimes linked inside the playlist; otherwise add a separate EPG URL |
The difference between the two is explained in M3U vs Xtream Codes.
Adding an EPG URL to your player
- Find the EPG link in your welcome message from the provider; it often ends in
.xmlor.xml.gz. - Open your player's settings and look for EPG, TV guide or XMLTV.
- Paste the URL and save.
- Start a manual update and wait. Large guides can take a minute or two the first time.
- Set how often the guide refreshes; once a day is enough.
Fixing common IPTV EPG problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Times are off by one or more hours | Time-zone mismatch | Set the device time zone correctly, then use the player's EPG time shift |
| Guide is empty everywhere | EPG not loaded or URL wrong | Re-enter the URL, update manually, check the link in a browser |
| Some channels have no data | Channel IDs do not match | Update the playlist and EPG; ask support to fix the mapping |
| Guide shows yesterday's programmes | Old cached data | Clear the EPG cache or force an update |
| Guide loads very slowly | Huge guide file, slow device | Reduce the number of days loaded, hide unused channel groups |
Daylight saving time causes a burst of "wrong time" problems twice a year. If times jump by exactly one hour after the clocks change, adjust the time shift by one hour.
How often should the IPTV EPG update?
Most guides cover between two and seven days ahead. Updating once a day keeps the schedule current without slowing your device; updating more often rarely adds anything. If your player allows it, schedule the update for the early morning so it never interrupts viewing. After your provider changes the channel list, force a manual update of both the playlist and the guide.
Matching channels to the guide
Every channel in the guide has an ID, and every channel in your playlist should carry the same ID (in M3U files it is the tvg-id attribute). When they match, the programme data appears. When a channel is renamed or a new one is added, the IDs can drift apart and the guide goes blank for that channel. Some players let you assign guide data to a channel manually; otherwise ask your provider to correct the mapping.
Why the EPG matters for catch-up and recording
Catch-up and scheduled recordings rely on guide times. If the EPG is off by an hour, a recording starts an hour early or late, and catch-up plays the wrong programme. Fix the guide first; our article on IPTV with recording covers the rest.
Players with good EPG support
Most modern players show a grid guide, but they differ in speed and in how they handle large files. Players designed for TV devices tend to be best. Our best IPTV player guide compares the main options by platform.
IPTV Europa includes a programme guide with every plan; see the pricing page for plan options, or contact us if your guide does not load.
Frequently asked questions
What does EPG mean in IPTV?
EPG stands for electronic programme guide: the TV schedule shown in your player, with the current and upcoming programmes for each channel.
Why is my IPTV EPG showing the wrong time?
The guide data and your device use different time zones. Set the correct time zone in the player, or adjust the EPG time shift by the number of hours it is off.
Why is the EPG empty for some channels?
The channel in your playlist has an ID that does not match any channel in the guide file, or the guide has no data for it. Update the EPG, or ask your provider to fix the mapping.
